Disaster and Risk Reduction
Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is a systematic approach to identifying, assessing and reducing the risks of disaster. It aims to reduce socio-economic vulnerabilities to disaster as well as dealing with environmental and other hazards. Disaster impacts have persistent, long-term negative effects on poverty and human development that undermine the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. While development has the potential to significantly reduce disaster risk, inappropriate development choices can also exacerbate vulnerabilities and aggravate the negative effects of disasters. Disaster risk reduction aims at addressing the underlying risk factors in order to reduce avoidable loss of life, property and livelihoods.

CSSP believes that the development of human resources at community and government department levels is crucial in order to promote disaster risk management in development practices. In order to promote common approaches for disaster risk management, CSSP has planned to develop the curriculum for the training of community organizations and district / municipal disaster management authorities in both Sindhi and Urdu languages.

CSSP will also launch advocacy campaigns on post-disaster issues related to the vulnerable segments of society especially women and children are they are the ones who usually suffer the most in any disaster.

After the mass floods in the summer of 2010 in Pakistan, CSSP believes that Disaster Risk Reduction is now more crucial than ever.
